Hi everyone, here are my best links and finds from the past 2 weeks. Sorry for the delay but it’s been quite mad around here with many online speaking gigs, and all the preparations for my next short film ‘The Good Future’ which will be shot in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, next months. See below for the amazing scenery we will be featuring in this film about what a ‘good future’ is, and how we can best create it. Thanks for reading my stuff, stay well and safe, and keep up the hope in these difficult times! The Future is better than we think. Zurich / Switzerland

A conversation with Gerd: So what is #TheGoodFuture and how to design it?
As a prep session for my upcoming film, I recently produced a more intimate interview session in my living room, outlining what I call the 4P’s framework: People, Planet, Purpose, and Prosperity, and why I see it as critical for ensuring a better future for humanity. In this video I discuss a wide range of topics: what kind of methods I use to formulate my key foresights, why we are truly at the pivot point of exponential change, and why capitalism (as we know it) is unfit for the future, and much more. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts. The entire Vimeo playlist (incl. ENG, ES, PT subtitle versions, also as download) is here. Please share widely if you like it.

Axios Future (a good resource)
With reason, we tend to focus on the huge and growing wealth gap between the ultrarich and the middle class and poor in rich countries like the U.S. But a much bigger gap exists between even the relatively less well-off in the developed world and most of humanity.

Buckminster Fuller Presages Online Education, with a Touch of TED, Netflix, and Pandora, in 1962
In 1962, Buckminster Fuller delivered a prophetic lecture at SIU on the future of education aimed at “solving problems by design competence instead of by political reform.” It turned out to be a prescient vision for online education decades before the web as we know it, and half a century before the golden age of MOOCs, with elements of TED and Pandora mixed in.

Future of Money - CitiGPS
Digital is taking over the world and money is no different. A ‘space race’ is underway in digital money with central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) on the policy agenda, Big Tech ambitions in the space, and crypto becoming increasingly popular, albeit more as a digital asset than a transaction currency for now….

Portugal creates carbon taxes on air and sea travel
According to the Portuguese government – in the so-called ‘Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality 2050’ – carbon neutrality is economically and technologically feasible and is based on reducing emissions between 85% and 90% by 2050 and offsetting remaining emissions by ensuring agricultural and forestry carbon sequestration capacity of around 13 million tonnes.

April may be the most important month for climate action ever - Axios
Between the lines: According to the U.N., the world is on track for at least 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 Fahrenheit) of warming by 2100 if countries stick to their current Paris emissions targets. Scientists warn that this could cause catastrophic consequences, such as the accelerated melting of polar ice sheets

What’s the Green Fuel of the Future for Shipping? - The Washington Post
Shipping is the backbone of the global economy, carrying more than 80% of the world’s traded goods. But it also accounts for almost 3% of man-made carbon dioxide emissions. If the world’s ships are going to hit targets for reducing emissions, they’ll need to start burning clean fuel by 2030. The question is, which one(s)?

ELF #OwnTheFuture Online Event: My Keynote on European Regulation
In this talk, I comment on the Covid-19 “Infodemic” and what it means for the future of (social) media and technology regulation, and describe what challenges to our economic and social models may emerge. I outline my key ‘definitive future’ foresights such as the End of Oil and Global Decarbonization, the dawning ‘human renaissance’ and the imminent action on global warming. I also present my ‘preferred futures’ such as a sustainable capitalism (people planet purpose and prosperity), the rise of digital ethics and a new multilateralism.

Reminder: Happiness is not a download, and technology is not what we seek, but how we seek 😊
» Happiness is not a download, and technology is not what we seek, but how we seek. - 8 years ago, when I started researching how we can define happiness, I repeatedly ran across a distinction between two different types of happiness. The first, hedonic happiness, is often described as a positive mental high point, usually temporary, related to the experience of pleasure. It may…
